Self-Serving Bias as a Defense Mechanism

Blend Images/Ariel Skelley/Getty Images More in Theories Cognitive Psychology Behavioral Psychology Developmental Psychology Personality Psychology Social Psychology Biological Psychology Psychosocial Psychology Self-serving bias is how social psychologists describe humansâ tendency to blame external forces when bad things happen and to give ourselves credit when good things happen. Although it can mean evading personal responsibility for your actions, self-serving bias is a defense mechanism that protects your self-esteem. When Self-Serving Bias Occurs Letâs say you ace an exam. The self-serving bias would lead you to believe that its because you studied hard. If you failed, on the other hand, you might believe it was because the teacher didnt explain the subject correctly, the classroom was too warm, or your roommate kept you up all night before the exam. All of these things may be true, but theyâre not painting a complete picture of all the circumstances that led to your performance on the test. Examples of Self-Serving Bias Following a car accident, both parties involved blame the other driver for causing the crash. After a disastrous meeting with a potential client, a businessman blames losing the account on a competitors dirty business practices.A high school basketball player makes a throw during the final seconds of a game and manages to make a basket. He attributes this to his skill at the game. Why Self-Serving Bias Occurs In many cases, this cognitive bias allows you to protect your self-esteem. By attributing positive events to personal characteristics, you get a boost in confidence. By blaming outside forces for failures, you protect your self-esteem and absolve yourself from personal responsibility. A number of factors have been shown to influence the self-serving bias, including age and gender. Older adults tend to make more internal attributions, that is, credit themselves for their successes. Men are more likely to make external attributions, meaning they tend to blame outside forces for their failures. Often when a person is depressed or has low self-esteem, this kind of bias may be reversed: theyâll attribute positive outcomes to outside help or even luck, and blame themselves when bad things happen. Common Situations Experts suggest that while this bias is quite widespread in Western cultures including the United States and Canada, it tends to be much less frequent in Eastern cultures like China and Japan. Why? Individualist cultures such as the U.S. place a greater emphasis on personal achievement and self-esteem, so protecting the self from feelings of failure is more important. ?On the other hand, collectivist cultures, such as tend to be found in Eastern cultures, are more likely to attribute personal success to luck and failures to lack of talent. There are some scenarios where self-serving bias is less likely. Some research has found that people in romantic relationships and close friendships tend to be more modest. Your friends or your partner, in other words, keep you in check with honest criticism about when a bad situation might be part of your own doing. Positive Side of Self-Serving Bias One advantage of this bias is that it leads people to persevere even in the face of adversity. An unemployed worker may feel more motivated to keep looking for work if he attributes his joblessness on a weak economy, for instance, rather than some personal failing. An athlete might feel more motivated to perform well if she believes that her failure during a previous event was the result of bad weather rather than a lack of skill. Gender Roles And Its Impact On The Family Structure
In this paper I will discuss gender role and its impact on inequality. I will discuss gender inequality and its impact on creating as well demolishing families. I will mention different family structures and how gender roles have changed throughout time. I will explain how feminism has given opportunities to women and in effect transformed the family structure. First let me define gender. Gender is composed of three parts: biology, gender roles, and sexuality. Gender roles are the behaviors, attitudes, appearance, and etcetera that a specific culture has deemed appropriate for a specific sex. May I note that gender roles can and do vary between cultures. Some cultures even include a third gender category because not everyone fits withinâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In our society we have come to believe that because a man is physically stronger (generally speaking) he is the one in charge of protecting the woman. Even though there are many women who are perfectly capable of protect ing themselves. So when two women are together in a relationship gender roles are blurred. There are those who donââ¬â¢t understand who will fill the role of protector. This is why I believe that gender role does more harm than good. In our culture, boys and girls are taught every day- either consciously or subconsciously- how they are supposed to act. For example, when we see commercials with military toys for boys and pretty little princesses for girls. In movies and television, men are the heroes in which they save the women. We all have heard the expression, ââ¬Å"boys will be boysâ⬠, when they are rough-housing or playing rambunctiously. However, girls should not partake in these activities for they may get hurt and thatââ¬â¢s not how a lady acts anyway. Therefore boys receive the message that boys are to be in charge and dominant and the girls should be submissive (socialization approach). ââ¬Å"Societyââ¬â¢s expectations about how to behave are transmitted to children through channels such as parents, books, television, and peer groups. In these ways, cultural differences between men and women are reproduced in the next generation. (Public and Private Families)â⬠In our culture

Life Without Televisions Free Essays
Life without Television When my familyââ¬â¢s only television set went to the repair shop the other day, my parents, my sister, and I thought we would have a terrible week. How could we get through the long evenings in such a quiet house? What would it be like without all the shows to keep us company? We soon realized, though, that living without television for a while was a stroke of good fortune. It became easy for each of us to enjoy some activities alone, to complete some postponed chores, and to spend rewarding time with each other and friends. We will write a custom essay sample on Life Without Televisions or any similar topic only for you Order Now First of all, with no television to compete for our time, we found plenty of hours for personal interests. We all read more that week than we had read during the six months before. For instance, I was able to finish ââ¬Å"The Scarlet Letterâ⬠, a novel assigned in my English class. Also my younger sister read 300 pages of the last book of the ââ¬Å"Twilightâ⬠series. We each also enjoyed some hobbies we had ignored for ages. My dadââ¬â¢s old enthusiasm for gardening returned, and he started planting vegetables in his garden. My mom had time to open her bakery book and bake Italian desserts such as Profiterole and tiramisu. My sister and I played volleyball in the back yard, a sport that we loved since we were younger. In addition, my sister and I both stopped procrastinating with our homework. We both found out that it was really helpful to work on homework ahead of time; therefore I worked on chapter three and four of my Algebra homework for next week. I also finished my study guide for my English test. My sister as well worked on her French and Government assignments. Second we did chores that had been hanging over our heads for too long. There were many jobs around the house that had needed attention for some time. Cleaning our rooms was the first chore we did; my sister and I cleaned our entire room and vacuumed the carpet. Then my mom cleaned the counter tops and all the shelves of the kitchen. Finally my dad managed to clean his garage and put all of his tools back on the shelves. We also had a chance to do some long- postponed shopping. My father went to SEARS to buy a sofa that was needed in his room. My mom went to LOWES to buy accessories for her bathroom. My sister and I went to the mall to buy her prom dress and I was able to buy two pairs of jeans and two shirts that I wanted. And each of us also caught up with e-mails and did paperwork that was long overdue. My mom had some office work done, such as sales reports for the committee of her company. My dad finally wrote an e-mail to my grandma that is living in Spain with my aunt Susan. My sister also replied to e-mails from her friends that live in Italy. And I was able to complete my FASFA application for the fall semester. Finally, and probably most important, we spent time with each other. Instead of just being in the same room together while we stared at a screen, we actually talked for many pleasant hours. My parents and I never had long conversations before, and during that week, we got to know each other more than we did for the past five years. My sister and I talked more about each other and we found out that we have a lot of interests in common. Moreover, for the first time in years, my family played some games together. My sister enjoys playing Monopoly; therefore, we played almost every night. We also played chest, one of my dadââ¬â¢s favorite games. My momââ¬â¢s favorite game is dominos; although my sister ended up winning every game. And because we didnââ¬â¢t have to worry about missing this or that show, we had some family friends over on a couple of evenings and spent enjoyable time with them. We would play volleyball in the back yard. After several games we would have dinner in the back patio enjoying the lovely weather while listening to classical music. And finally after dinner we would make a bonfire and sit around it and remember memories with our friends. Once our television returned, we were not prepared to put it in the attic. But we had a sense of how it can take over our lives if we are not careful. We are now more selective. We turn on the set for our favorite shows, certain sports events, and the news, but we donââ¬â¢t leave it running all evening. As a result, we find we can enjoy television and still have time left over for other activities and interests. How to cite Life Without Televisions, Essay examples

Political Valuess and Watergate Watergate provides utile stuff for analyzing the operation of the President, Congress or Supreme Court. It gives some thought of the interplay between the 3 weaponries of the American political system and of the political values underpinning the constitutional model. Congressional commissions ( Senate Watergate A ; House Judiciary ) # 8211 ; The operation of these commissions demonstrate a cardinal difference between the Australian and American political systems. US congressional commissions have much more independency and power than parliamentary commissions in Australia. The enquiries undertaken by the Senate Watergate Committee were important in procuring Nixon # 8217 ; s surrender. The recommendation by the Judiciary Committee to impeach the president was carried by the ballots of both Democrat and Republican members. Supreme Court power over the Executive subdivision # 8211 ; The cheques and balances built into the US system were demonstrated by the opinions of the Court that Nixon let go of the tapes of Oval Office conversations. Presidential executive power, and the White House office # 8211 ; Nixon claimed # 8220 ; executive privilege # 8221 ; for the White House tapes and other paperss. His personal staff, peculiarly Haldeman and Erlichman, show the power that the White House office can exert. Unlike Cabinet assignments, these places are non capable to Senate verification. Separation of powers # 8211 ; No member of any of the 3 weaponries of the US authorities may belong to any of the other weaponries. Checks and balances # 8211 ; The Watergate dirt demonstrates the complex web of precautions built into the American Constitution. On the one manus, the President is the Head of Government, but does non command the Legislature. Unlike a Westminster Prime Minister, the President can non fade out Congress. Whilst the President may put up members of the Judicial arm, they require Senate blessing. Similarly, the President serves a fixed 4-year term and may merely be removed following an impeachment procedure that must get down in the House of Representatives. The President may merely be removed from office by the Senate. Valuess of answerability and duty # 8211 ; the remotion of Richard Nixon demonstrates an array of answerability procedures. Whilst functioning a fixed term of office, the President is accountable to the House of Representatives, the chamber that most straight reflects the most recent sentiment of the state. However, in maintaining with the Federalist values of the Establishing Fathers, it is merely the Senate, where each province, irrespective of population, is represented by two Senators, which may take the president.
